Amaranthus

Amaranthus, (collectively known as Amaranth and often called Love Lies Bleeding), is closely related to Celosia. Amaranthus is a traditional food plant in Africa and has the potential to improve nutrition.

The flowers of red amaranthus were used by the Hopi, (a tribe from western America),  to make a deep red dye.

The word ‘amaranthus’ is derived from the Greek word ‘amarantos’, meaning ‘unfading’, and the word ‘anthos’, meaning ‘flower’.

As a commercially available cut flower, amaranthus is available in two main categories – upright varieties and trailing varieties. Amaranthus is sold in the wholesale flower markets in wraps of 10 stems. Upright red amaranthus varieties are generally available between August & November, green upright amaranthus between June & November and trailing amaranthus varieties between July & November.

Trailing amaranthus has slender drooping spikes of flowers approximately 45cm long and is a florists favourite when it comes to adding dramatic effect to pedestal arrangements etc in wedding flowers.

Caring for Amaranthus

To get the best from your wholesale cut amaranthus please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with cold luke warm and add flower food.
  • Place the amaranthus in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the amaranthus in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
