Cornflowers (Centaurea)

Cornflowers, (real name: Centaurea), is a genus of the Asteraceae family usually only found growing wild in the Northern Hemisphere.

Common names for cornflowers are Knapweeds, Starthistles and Loggerheads. The most recognisable blue centaurea, (Cyanus), variety is commonly known as The Cornflower or The Basketflower.

Cornflowers are a popular food for insects that would usually eat crops so it is advised that farmers allow cornflowers to grow in the fields.

Cornflowers are available as a cut flower on the wholesale flower markets and are sold in wholesale wraps of 50 stems. Stem lengths are usually between 50cm – 60cm tall. The yellow cornflower variety ‘macrocephala’ is only available as a cut flower in June and July.

The demand for blue cornflowers for use in wedding flowers has rocketed over the last couple of years.

Caring for Cornflowers (Centaurea)

To get the best from your wholesale cut cornflowers please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the cornflowers in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the cornflowers in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
