Crocosmia (Montbretia)

Crocosmia, (otherwise commonly known as Montbretia), is a genus of the iris family Iridaceae and is very similar looking to freesia. (Some florists call crocosmia ‘freesia on steroids!). It is native to the grasslands of South Africa and grows from a ‘corm’.

The colourful orange or red flowers are positioned on long arched spikes at the top of the branched stems. Crocosmia leaves are long, thin and slender. The brightly coloured flowers attract insects for pollination but crocosmia is also pollinated by humming birds and the wind.

In America, crocosmia is also known as Falling Stars and Coppertips.

The word ‘crocosmia’ is derived from the Greek word ‘krokos’, meaning ‘saffron’ and the word ‘osme’, meaning ‘odour’.

Crocosmia is available as a cut flower on the wholesale flower markets and is sold in wraps of 20 or 50 stems. Stem length can vary from 60cm – 90cm tall.

When in season, crocosmia is a relatively cheap wholesale flower and can be used to great effect by adding bright flashes of colour to bridal bouquets and wedding flowers in general.

Caring for Crocosmia (Montbretia)

To get the best from your wholesale cut crocosmia please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the crocosmia in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the crocosmia in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
