Gypsophilia (Baby's Breath)

Gypsophilia, otherwise known as Baby's Breath or simply 'Gyp' in the floristry trade, is a genus of the Caryophyllaceae family. Gypsophilia naturally grows on calcium rich soils including gypsum - hence the name gypsophila! It's botanical name literally means 'lover of chalk'.

Gypsophilia is important in the flower industry and is commonly used as a filler, creating a softening effect aswell. The flowers are tiny, depending on the variety between 3 - 10mm in diameter, and there are 1000's on each branched stem.

Gypsophilia is commonly used in the USA to decorate childrens hair at occasions such as weddings. It is also a very popular wedding flower in the UK.

In the wholesale flower markets gypsophilia is sold in wraps of 25 stems and is available in a number of varieties, grades and stem lengths. As a rule of thumb, the taller the stem length, the better the quality.

Caring for Gypsophilia (Baby's Breath)

To get the best from your wholesale cut gypsophilia please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the gypsophlia in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Top Tip
You can speed up the opening of the flower heads dramatically by following the advice below:

  • Pour a gallon of boiling water into a bucket.
  • Add two tablespoons of bleach.
  • Place the stem ends of the gypsophilia into the boiling water & bleach solution.
  • You will literally beable to see the flowers pop open!!

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the gypsophilia in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
