Heliconias

Tropical Helconias are a genus of the Heliconiaceae family and are native to the Tropical Americas and Pacific Islands where they are an important food source for humming birds.

The heliconias brightly coloured, waxy flowers are produces on long or drooping panicles with true love flowers peeping out from the bracts. A common name for heliconias is 'Lobster Claws'. The heliconia is closely related to Strelizia, (Bird of Paradise), and the banana.

These days most heliconias are produced specifically for the floristry trade. There are quite a few varieties available on the wholesale flower markets, (some upright, some hanging), and they are a superb long lasting flower for use in the hot summer months especially. Although relatively expensive, they will last for weeks and weeks with little care required - you may have seen tropical flowers in hotel displays, and apart from their stunning impact, this is the reason. Heliconias are rarely used in wedding flowers.

Commercially cut heliconias are sold in stem lengths varying from 60 - 120cm tall depending on the variety and are available for most of the year.

Caring for Heliconias

To get the best from your wholesale cut heliconias please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the heliconias in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the heliconias in a warm place and always keep out of the way of children.
