As a plant, iris is available in numerous varieties, including the beautiful bearded iris. Unfortunately, commercially available fresh cut iris is far more limited with only a handful of varieties grown. The upside is that fresh cut iris is now available all year round in one variety or another on the wholesale flower markets, (not just in spring time).
Stem lengths are usually between 50 and 60cm long and it is wholesaled in wraps of 50 stems. The best quality iris is grown in the spring time, (its natural season), and is sent to auction in vast quantities. Using iris in hot summer months can be tricky as the flower buds are prone to opening very quickly and can be over before their intended use. (The vase life of iris in hot weather is very short indeed). In winter a common fault with iris is that sometimes the flowers do not open at all!
Although many varieties of iris are described as blue by name, they are in fact purple. The nearest iris to the colour blue is Iris Ideal - a sort of wedgewood blue. This variety is not often available to buy at the flower auctions and can be very expensive when it is.

To get the best from your wholesale cut iris please read the care instructions below carefully:
- Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
- Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
- Place the iris in the buckets.
- Leave over night to condition before using.
Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the iris in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
