Amaranthus
Amaranthus, (collectively known as Amaranth and often called Love Lies Bleeding), is closely related to Celosia. Amaranthus is a traditional food plant in Africa and has the potential to improve nutrition.
The flowers of red amaranthus were used by the Hopi, (a tribe from western America), to make a deep red dye.
The word ‘amaranthus’ is derived from the Greek word ‘amarantos’, meaning ‘unfading’, and the word ‘anthos’, meaning ‘flower’.
As a commercially available cut flower, amaranthus is available in two main categories – upright varieties and trailing varieties. Amaranthus is sold in the wholesale flower markets in wraps of 10 stems. Upright red amaranthus varieties are generally available between August & November, green upright amaranthus between June & November and trailing amaranthus varieties between July & November.
Trailing amaranthus has slender drooping spikes of flowers approximately 45cm long and is a florists favourite when it comes to adding dramatic effect to pedestal arrangements etc in wedding flowers.

- Place the amaranthus in the buckets.
