Ananas (Ornimental Pineapples)
Ananas, (pineapples), are a member of the Bromeliaceae family and are native to Mesoamerica . Ananas were taken to the Caribbean by Carib natives.
Christopher Columbus first set eyes on ananas in 1493. They were shipped to Europe and sold to the Pacific Islands by the English and Spanish. Since then ananas have become one of the most popular fruits in the world.
Ananas flowers grow from the heart of the large leaves on a short, woody stem and are crowned by a ring of leaves.
Ornimental ananas are also grown commercially for the cut flower industry – the most common variety being Ananas Lucidas. They are available in the wholesale flower markets in wraps of 10 stems and are usually no taller than 30cm. Ananas are rarely used in wedding flowers but look fantastic if the theme is 'tropical'.
