Carnations
Carnations, real name Dianthus, were first grown by the Greeks. The word ‘dios’ refers to the god Zeus & the word ‘anthos’ meaning ‘flower’. Carnations are available in two varieties, 1). Standard carnations – large single headed bloom per stem and, (2), Spray Carnations – multi headed flowers per stem. Carnations and spray carnations are known for their long vase life and are used extensively in all walks of floristry.
Standard Carnations
Standard carnations are grown all over the world, the best qualities being recognised as Colombian and Ecuadorian. They are also grown under glass in Holland. The Dutch carnations are cut with the flower heads open, they are packed in wholesale wraps of 20 stems and are subject to price fluctuation as they are sent through the auction system. Although the quality is not as good as the Colombian, they have their uses when a specific variety is need quickly. Colombian carnations are cut in almost closed bud, (so time is needed in advance for them to open), they are packed in wholesale wraps of 25 stems and the price does not fluctuate as much because they don’t go through the Dutch auction system - prices traditionally only rise slightly at peak periods like Christmas, Mothers Day & Valentines. Standard carnations are very popular for button holes for wedding flowers.
Spray Carnations
Spray carnations again, are grown all over the world and as with standard carnations the Colombian & Ecuadorian are the best. Dutch Spray carnations are grown under glass and are cut with the flower heads open. They are packed in wholesale wraps of 10-20 stems. Colombian spray carnations are packed in wraps of 5 stems and are cut in tighter bud.

To get the best from your wholesale cut carnations please read the care instructions below carefully:
- Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
- Always cyt the stem inbetween 'the knuckles'.
- Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
- Place the carnations in the buckets.
- Leave over night to condition before using.
Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the carnations in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
