Gossypium (Cotton)
Gossypium Hirsutum, (otherwise known as Mexican Cotton and Upland Cotton), is planted for the manufacture of cotton and is native to America.
There is also archaeological evidence that gossypium was grown in Mexico as long as 5000 years ago.
There are two main varieties of gossypium: one with short cotton fibres, called Short Staple Upland and one with long fibres called Long Staple Upland. The Long Staple gossypium is the most commonly variety used for commercial production of cotton.
Gossypium flowers look exactly like cotton wool balls and grow in clumps along a tall, woody stem.
Gossypium is available in cut form in the wholesale flower markets and is usually sold in boxes of 50 or 100 stems. Stem lengths are usually between 70 – 80cm tall. Gossypium is rarely used in wedding flowers.
