Hippeastrum
Hippeastrum, (otherwise commonly known as Amaryllis), is a genus of the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South American regions such as Mexico, Argentina and the Caribbean.
Hippeastrum is a popular plant house plant, very easily grown from bulb with large showy flowers, in the winter months.
Hippeastrum means ‘horseman’s star’ in Greek and is also commonly known as ‘Knights Star’ because of its resemblance to a medieval weapon used from horseback.
In the wholesale flower markets hippeastrum is available as a cut flower. Generally there are two grade distinctions: Four flower heads per stem and two flower heads per stem. (Four being the better quality).
Cut Hippeastrum, (Amaryllis), is available in three main category groups: (1). Galaxy – single flowers, (2). Double Galaxy – double flowers, and (3). Spider – spikey shaped flowers.
Cut hippeastrum is generally sold in boxes of 12, 15 or 18 stems. Some Pigmee varieties are sold 30 stems per box.

Hippeastrum are a hollow stemmed flower, (just like delphinium, aconitum, lupins and larkspur), and have to be conditioned in a specific way for best results:
- Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
- Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water & add flower food.
- Turn the hippeastrum upside down & fill the hollow stems with luke warm water.
- Hold your thumb over the end of the stem to stop the water from escaping.
- Turn the hippeastrum over & plungle into the bucket of water.
- Leave to condition over night before arranging.
Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the hippeastrum in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
