Lillies

Lilies are large showy flowers, grown from bulb and are native to the Northern Hemisphere. Fresh cut wholesale lilies are available all year round, but in larger quantities throughout the summer months when the prices are at their cheapest. Lilies should be purchased in tight green bud and the stems should be rigid & strong. Lilies are graded by stem length and the number of flower buds per stem. For example a small grade lily may be graded as 75cm tall with 2/3 buds, medium size 85cm tall with 4/5 buds and large lilies up to 110cm with 6/9 buds per stem. There are four main groups of lilies:

The Asian Lily, (or Aziatic Lily).

Asian lilies have erect buds and are available in bright colours such as yellow, pink, red, orange and white. They have narrow, lanceolate leaves and are widely used in bouquets. Aziatic lilies have no scent.

The Longiflorum Lily, (or Longi Lily)

Longiflorum lilies have long, trumpet shaped flowers set close together and wide deep green leaves. Available mostly in white but with a few pink, two tone & red varieties. Longi lilies have no scent.

The L. A. Lily

L. A. Lilies were created by crossing Asian lilies with Longi lilies - they have nothing to do with Los Angeles! L. A. lilies have larger flower buds than Asian lilies and the petals have round ends. They are available in bright colours along with some lovely pastel shades.

The Oriental Lily

With their beautiful large flowers, tall sturdy stems and wonderful perfume, the oriental lily just oozes luxury. They are the king of the lily family and the most stunning of flowers.

To get the best from your wholesale cut lilies please read the care instructions below carefully:

Always order lilies in advance of other flowers, as they will take a few days to open.
On receipt, cut the stems with a sharp knife at 45 degrees.
Sterilise a bucket and fill with clean tepid water & flower food.
Strip the lower foliage from the stems and place the flowers in the bucket.
As the flower buds begin to open, remove the stamens and discard. (The stamens are covered in pollen and will stain the petals).
The warmer you keep the lilies, the quicker they will open.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the lilies in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
