Nigella (Love in the Mist)

Nigella, (otherwise known as Love in the Mist and Devil in a Bush), is a genus of the Ranunculaceae family and is native to north Africa and southern Europe.
The seeds from Nigella Sativa are known as black cumin, and when dry roasted, are commonly used in India as a cooking spice. The nigella seeds taste like a combination of cracked black pepper, oregano and onions.
Another common use of nigella is to repel insects in a similar way to mothballs.
On the wholesale flower markets nigella is available as a cut flower and is sold in wraps of 10 or 25 stems. Stem lengths are usually no taller than 60 – 70cm. The vase life of nigella is very short and we would only recommend relying on it for the intended day of use. In 2010 nigella was an extremely popular wedding flower because of the in vogue ‘vintage’ style.

To get the best from your wholesale cut nigella please read the care instructions below carefully:
- Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
- Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
- Place the nigella in the buckets making sure the stems are supported.
- Leave over night to condition before using.
Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the nigella in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
