Helleborus (Christmas Rose)

Helleborus, (commonly known as Hellebores), are a genus of the Ranunculaceae family and are native to the Mediterranean and central Europe. The largest concentration of hellebores being in the Balkan regions.

Every helleborus has five petals surrounding a central ring of nectaries, (small petals designed to hold nectar).

Hellebores are also commonly known as Christmas Roses and Lenten Roses because they resemble wild roses. Helleborus is in no way related to the rose family though (Rosaceae). The name ‘Christmas Rose’ comes from a legend that helleborus sprouted in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.

Some varieties of helleborus are toxic and it is said that during the Siege of Kirrha, helleborus was used to poison the city’s water supplies by the Greeks. It is also believed that Alexander the Great died from helleborus poisoning when he took it a medicine.

In the wholesale flower markets helleborus is available in cut form for a short period only, making it extremely expensive for a small flower. It is sold in wraps of 10 or 20 stems and is usually no taller than 60cm. Helleborus is a lovely addition to wedding flowers at Christmas time.

To get the best from your wholesale cut helleborus please read the care instructions below carefully:

Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
Place the hellebores in the buckets - up to their necks in water.
Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the helleborus in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
