Hibiscus

Hibiscus

Hibiscus is a genus of the Malvaceae family and is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. There are literally hundreds of varieties of hibiscus.

The large, trumpet shaped hibiscus flowers occur intermittently along the whole length of a single, woody stem.

Hibiscus fruit capsules are commonly used for making herbal tea. In the Caribbean hibiscus flowers are used for making a thick red tea that is high in vitamin C. Certain varieties of hibiscus are used as food colourings.

Hibiscus bark contains very strong fibres, and is used to make grass skirts and wigs in Polynesia. In the Philippines the flowers and leaves are crushed to a sticky juice and is used by children to blow bubbles from straws. Tahitian women wear a single hibiscus flower behind their ear to show they are available for marriage - with this in mind, why not use wholesale cut hibiscus in your next wedding flowers project?

Hibiscus is available in the wholesale flower markets as a cut flower and is sold in wraps of 10 or 50 stems. Stem lengths are usually around 70 – 80cm tall.

To get the best from your wholesale cut hibiscus please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the hibiscus in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the hibiscus in a warm place and always keep out of the way of children.
