Lillies

Lilies are large showy flowers, grown from bulb and are native to the Northern Hemisphere. Fresh cut wholesale lilies are available all year round, but in larger quantities throughout the summer months when the prices are at their cheapest. Lilies should be purchased in tight green bud and the stems should be rigid & strong. Lilies are graded by stem length and the number of flower buds per stem. For example a small grade lily may be graded as 75cm tall with 2/3 buds, medium size 85cm tall with 4/5 buds and large lilies up to 110cm with 6/9 buds per stem. There are four main groups of lilies:

Lily of The Valley (Convallaria)

Lily of The Valley, (real name: Convallaria), is the only convallaria species in the Ruscaceae family and is native to woodlands in the Northern Hemisphere.

Leonotis

Leonotis is an orange flowering plant and a genus of the Lamiaceae family. It is native to Africa and Northern India.

Leucanthemum

Leucanthemum is a genus of the helianthus, (sunflower), family Astercaeae and are native to Europe and Northern Africa.

Leucospermum (Pincushion Protea)

Leucospermum, (otherwise known as Pincushion Protea), is a genus of the protea family Proteaceae and is native to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Closely related to Banksia, Leucospermum require smoke from bush fires to spread their seeds.

Liatris

Liatris, (otherwise known as Blazing Star, Button Snakeroot and Gay-Feather), is a genus of the Asteraceae family and native to the Bahamas, North America and Mexico.

Limonium (& Statice)

Limonium is a genus of the Plumbaginaceae family and is often found growing naturally near the coast, in salt marshes and in alkaline soil.

Lupines

Lupines, (otherwise known as Bluebonnets and Quaker Bonnets), are a genus of the Fabaceae family.

Lysimachia

Lysimachia, (otherwise known as Loosestrife), is a genus of the Myrsinaceae family and prefer to grow in damp conditions.

Leucadendron

Leucadendron is a genus of the Proteaceae family and is native to South Africa. Leucadendron has a woody cone-shaped seed head at the very top and the waxy leaves are arranged in spirals along the length of the stem.

Leatherleaf (Arachniodes)

Leatherleaf Fern, (otherwise known as Baker Fern - real name Arachniodes), is a member of the Dryopteridaceae family. Leatherleaf is a dark green glossy fern with triangular fronds and is commonly used in floristry as a foundation for floral bouquets and flower arrangements.

Lily Grass & China Grass (T-Grass)

Lily Grass, (also known as T-Grass), is a very popular foliage used in floristry as a green filler for flower arrangements. The plain green variety is known simply as 'Lily Grass' whilst the varigated variety is known as 'China Grass'. Both varieties are T-Grass. China grass is an extemely popular wedding flower foliage.
