Calandula (Pot Marigolds)

Calandula (Pot Marigolds)

Calandula is a genus of the daisy family Asteraceae and is native from the Mediterranean through to Iran.

Although calendula is known as ‘The Pot Marigold’, it should not be confused with marigolds or any plants of the Tagetes genus.

The Calandula’s name is derived from Latin, meaning ‘the first day of the month’. This is probably because Calandulas are in flower at the start of most months.

The Calandula is not a very popular cut flower and is very scarce in the flower auctions these days. It is not a flower that we would recommend using as calandulas are very delicate and have a very short vase life when cut. Saying that, calandulas are often used to make Asian wedding flower garlands. When available on the wholesale flower markets calandulas are normally no taller that 50cm – 60cm tall.

To get the best from your wholesale cut calandula please read the care instructions below carefully:

  • Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
  • Fill sterilised buckets with luke warm water and add flower food.
  • Place the calandula in the buckets.
  • Leave over night to condition before using.

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the calandula in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
