Protea
The Protea, (often commonly called the Sugar Bush), is a genus of the Proteaceae family and are native to South Africa.
The protea was named after the Greek god Proteus in 1735 by Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist and zoologist.
Former architect of apartheid and South African Prime Minister, Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, wanted to change the national flag with a springbok jumping over a wreath of six proteas in the center. These changes were never implemented.
In the wholesale flower markets protea is available as a cut flower and sold in wraps of 10 or 15 stems. Stem lengths vary depending on the species. Various varieties of protea are seasonally available at different times of the year, although one or more can always be purchased all year round.
Have you ever included proteas in your wedding flowers? Go on - give then a try!
Proteas are a tropical flower and as such enjoy warm conditions, making them ideal for use in summer flower arrangements and displays.

To get the best from your wholesale cut protea please read the care instructions below carefully:
- Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife.
- Place the protea in the buckets.
- Leave over night to condition before using.
Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the proteas in a warm place and always keep out of the way of children.
