Peony

The Peony, (or Paeony), is the name of the flower in the genus 'Paeonia'. Peonies are native to Asia, North America and Southern Europe. The peony is named after Paeon, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Another little known peony fact is that in 1957 the Indiana General Assembly made the peony the state flower of Indiana, a title it still holds to this day.

Peonies are extremely popular wedding flowers, but many brides to be are disappointed because the peony is only available on the wholesale flower markets from the start of April until July. Wholesale peony flowers are mainly grown in Holland outdoors and are sent to the flower auctions for sale. Some import peonies are available after the end of July, but they are very few & far between and cannot be relied on.

Wholesale Peony Availability

Peonies are highly seasonal flowers and are most strongly associated with late spring and early summer. Availability, colour and variety depend heavily on season and market supply.

Peony development depends on the harvest stage, transport conditions, storage and conditioning method. Some judgement is needed when assesing bud firmness, petal development and readiness to open.

Cut peonies are wholesaled in wraps of 10 or 20 stems and are available in whites, creams, various shades of pink and red.

When peonies are out of season, Colombian Garden Roses or Garden roses are a perfect substitute.

Conditioning and Care

To get the best from your wholesale cut peonies, please read the care instructions below carefully:

Allow extra time if buds are very tigt or if cool storage is being used.
Ideal temperature is 8 to 12 degrees
Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle with a sharp knife, carbon blade scissors or secateurs.
Remove any foliage that is below the waterline.
Fill sterilised buckets with fresh, clean (lukewarm) water and add flower food.
Place the peonies in the buckets.
If the buds are tight, carefully slit stems by 2-3cm to improve water uptake.
Remove any sticky sap from heads/sepals using clean water and cloth.
Leave overnight to condition before using.
To encourage opening, place in a warm, well-lit environment with lukewarm water.
To delay opening, wrap the flower heads in brown paper (supplied) or fishnet stockings, and store in a cool, dark place with cold water.
Dark residue on sepals is often botrytis, a common storage moul that can easily be removed with water and cloth.
Change the water every 2-3 days
Peonies are sensitive to ethylene gas
Peonies are thirsty, so top up regularly

Never leave cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, in a draft or near fruit. (The gas used to ripen fruit will harm most flowers). Keep the peonies in a cool place and always keep out of the way of children.
