Hydrangea

Wholesale Hydrangeas are one of the most spectacular cut flowers available on the wholesale flower markets. Loved for their large, showy flower heads and beautiful colour range, hydrangeas are a popular choice for weddings, events, sympathy flowers and statement arrangements.

Hydrangea blooms can be impressively large, with some heads reaching 20 to 25cm in diameter, depending on the variety and grade. Stem lengths vary from shorter 30cm stems through to taller premium stems of around 70 to 80cm, making them suitable for everything from bridal bouquets to large venue arrangements.

Wholesale Hydrangeas are particularly useful in floristry and ideal for wedding flowers because of their size and visual impact. Although they can be more expensive than other flowers, their size means they will cover large areas and are less time-consuming to work with than smaller, more fiddly flowers needed in a design.

Wholesale Hydrangeas sold as cut flowers are grown under glass, and as a result, have much cleaner blooms & glossier foliage than outdoor plants – quite simply, there is no comparison between the two.

Fresh Hydrangea vs Classic Hydrangea

Wholesale Hydrangeas are unique because, as the season progresses, the colour of the bloom changes from the original plain colour. The petals take on other colours depending on the type and amount of minerals that the plant’s vascular system has taken up. For example, if the plant absorbs aluminium, pink blooms will change to blue & all shades in between. These changing blooms are called ‘Classic’.

Plain coloured blooms that haven’t started the colour changing process are called ‘Fresh’. Classic hydrangeas are renowned for their long vase life.

Wholesale Hydrangea Availability

The premium-grade flowers available in the UK markets are grown in Holland.

Dutch 'Fresh' Hydrangea are not available in the winter months. Broadly, they are available from mid-May until the end of September.

Dutch ‘Classic’ hydrangea varieties are available from June to November.

'Colombian' hydrangea varieties are available year-round in limited colours and smaller blooms. You can source pale blue, ivory white, pale pink and pale green.

Different hydrangea varieties and their specific availability are shown in more detail below.

Other Information about Wholesale Hydrangea

  • When to order? For weddings and events, we usually recommend 2-3 days before the event. This allows time for the hydrangea to re-hydrate properly after transport and be checked before arranging.
  • Water requirements: Hydrangea are very thirsty flowers and should not be left out of water for long periods, especially in warm weather.
  • Woody stems: For thicker or woody stems, carefully split up or score the base of the stem to improve water uptake.
  • Reviving wilted hydrangea: Re-cut the stems, place them in deep, fresh water, and if needed, submerge the flower heads in cool water for a few hours or overnight to help them re-hydrate.
  • Best uses: Hydrangeas are ideal for wedding bouquets, table arrangements, large urns, pedestals, floral arches, sympathy flowers, gift bouquets and event styling.
  • Design tip: One hydrangea stem creates a lot of impact and coverage, making it useful for full, luxurious arrangements where volume is needed quickly.
  • 'Classic' Hydrangea varieties are often longer-lasting than fresh Hydrangea because the blooms are more mature and firmer.
