Mistletoe is a parasite plant that attaches itself to and the branches of a tree. European mistletoe has pairs of oval shaped green leaves, woody stems and clusters of white, sticky berries.

It is important to keep mistletoe out of the reach of children as it is poisonous and causes gastric promlems, diarrhea and a low pulse.

Mistletoe is cut at Christmas time for use in decorations etc. According to Christian custom, if a man and woman met under a sprig of mistletoe they were obliged to kiss, plucking a berry from the mistletoe each time. Once the berries were gone, the privilege of kissing ceases.

Mistletoe is always available on the wholesale flower market in the run up to Christmas. It is usually sold in wooden crates as shown in the picture below.
